http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-MARTIN-D-18-L-LEFT-HANDED-LEFTY-ALL-ORIGINAL-ASTOUNDING-TONE-MACHINE-/201363929548? Hi everyone, I'm a lefty so I was excited to see this on eBay today, hoping the experts...

Thanks for the input, MartinPlayer, I appreciate it; I completely agree on a mid-$2k value. Hoping for some input on originality from the knowledgable vintage folks on here as well

'64 would be old factory/hide glue. It is highly likely that it needs a neck reset, so add $500 to your cost. Looks like a fine guitar and a bargain at half the price.

Gil, the serial number on this one puts it after the move to the new factory. It may be a hard sell at that price, but it sort of falls under the "when will I find another one" rule.

yea i would jump on it at a more reasonable price even with the neck reset. I knew '64 was the changeover but since searched and found #196228 was the last old factory/hide glue guitar. Anyone have an...

While it doesn't show the back of the headstock, the tuners look correct. The D-18 didn't get Rotomatics until 1965. I think what you're seeing on the headstock is scratches from strings. Nothing...

great, thanks for your help with the bridge and tuners, much appreciated

Not sure what the correct price for a 1964 D-18 is, but the supply of factory left handed vintage guitars is limited. That's gotta be a factor.

Well, being a lefty who's interested in vintage guitars, the supply of lefties is so small, that any that pop up pique my interest. I usually just buy right handed guitar and switch them to right...

Having sold many vintage guitars, both righty and lefty, and some high-priced guitars at that, I can tell you the supply side argument always wins out with lefty instruments. And the really desirable...

Thanks for the perspective as a seller, Flat 9; I would imagine some of the more collectible lefties could draw some righty collectors as buyers for sheer rarity and collectibility as well. I was more...

There's very little cross buying among righties and lefties IMO; lefties stick to buying lefties and righties typically look at lefty guitars with mockery and disdain as we've seen on various forums....

You can buy an awful lot of guitar for the 5k lefty ransom. If you're buying for tone you need to be able to compare with something & 5k will buy a lot of choice if one's scope is broader. If...

couldn't agree more, Bluegrassdread; given the price and not being able to see/play in person, I'll keep shopping for the right mahogany dread. Flat 9, I've done the same thing with strats and always...

As a lefty I also agree with bluegrass. It's hard when you love that vintage sound but are held ransom by the rarity of a lefty. This guitar is being offered at well beyond a premium. I've gotten very...

The wear pattern seems weird to me too. The way there is finish wear all around the pickguard as if it's been taken off after shrinking & put back on.
View ArticleRe: '64 D-18 LEFTY on eBay--thoughts?
I saw the edge of the pick guard and thought the same thing. I think some lefty will pick up a very cool guitar. Might pay a premium plus for it, but it's probably one of a dozen or so lefties D18s...

I'm a lefty. I'd love to own a vintage lefty like this one. As one poster has already mentioned, you can get a LOT of guitar for $5k or under. I've found more "bang-for-the-buck" in custom ordering...
